Aust-Lofoten Upper Secondary School has a diverse body of students, and there are situations where students have special needs that the school must adapt to, this to give all students the possibility for the best results possible.
Tutors and The Student Service
Our school is organized around the student and the needs of each student. Each class at school has one or two tutors specially dedicated to that class and its students. These teachers especially concentrate on the learning environment, the needs of each student, and they are the primary contact for the class's students, parents and other bodies in school.
At the Student Service we have several specialists employed, as the school nurse, milieu therapists, special educational advisers and a specialised minority adviser that guide and help students from minority background. Appointments with these specialists are made as necessary.
The Student Service work closely with the psychiatric services for children and young people (BUP), and Oppfølgingstjenesten (OT) a monitoring and advisory service for youth that are not enrolled at an educational institution or may drop out of education.
Physical Needs
The school has universal access to all rooms for students with special physical needs. There are elevators in the school buildings and students in Norway with special needs, as example related to hearing or vision impairment or other special physical needs, has the right to have their needs facilitated for.
Students that for some reasons has temporary injuries or other conditions that demands transportation to school has this paid by the county. This transportation may be organized in cooperation with the local taxi company.
Psychological Needs
Aust-Lofoten Upper Secondary School has dedicated specialists employed concerned with students social, emotional, psychological welfare in accordance with Norwegian regulations – as explained under The Student Service.
Learning disabilities
Students diagnosed with dyslexia are provided with audio books and have tools and programs accessible as correcting programs on their personal computer and are allowed facilitations during mock exams, school writings and exams. Test held by the PPT (Pedagogical Psychological Service), which serves all students and apprentices in the county, help to detect learning disabilities as dyslexia and dyscalculia and support the school to facilitate for students with these special needs.
In Norway students with special needs has by law the right to have their needs facilitated for. Therefore, special needs must be communicated to the school as early as possible to achieve the best arrangement and the best academic results for the student. Supporting documents in English or Norwegian must be submitted to the school. Based on the documentation the school will make arrangements in accordance with Norwegian law and regulations and IB Rules and Regulations.
